When a monitor arm is worth it, and when it is not
A monitor arm solves two specific problems. If you do not have either of them, a stack of books does the same job for nothing.
Monitor arms occupy an odd position in desk setups. They are recommended constantly, they look like the mark of a serious workspace, and a good one costs about as much as a decent keyboard.
They also solve a narrower set of problems than the recommendation implies. It is worth knowing which problems those are before buying one.
The problem an arm does not solve
Monitor height is the reason most people think they need an arm. The top of your screen should sit at or slightly below eye level, and most monitors ship on stands too short to achieve that.
An arm fixes this. So does a stack of books. So does a $15 monitor riser, or a ream of paper, or the box the monitor came in.
Height is a solved problem with any rigid object of the right thickness. If raising the screen is your only complaint, solve it for nothing and spend the money elsewhere — a chair adjustment you do not have, or a keyboard, both of which have no free equivalent.
The two problems an arm actually solves
Desk depth you cannot otherwise recover
A monitor stand occupies the space it stands on. On a shallow desk — 60 cm or less — that space is the difference between a workable setup and a cramped one. An arm clamps at the back edge and holds the screen out over the desk, so the footprint under the screen is free.
This is the strongest case for an arm and the one worth paying for. It is not about looking tidy; it is about recovering depth on a desk that does not have enough.
Positions that change during the day
Stands hold a screen in one place. That is fine if you sit the same way all day, and it is a genuine limitation if you do not:
- Sit-stand desks. The comfortable screen angle when standing is not the same as when sitting. An arm lets you adjust in a second; a stand means living with a compromise at one of the two heights.
- Sharing the screen. Turning a monitor towards someone beside you is a motion an arm makes trivial and a stand makes awkward.
- Two people, one desk. Different eye heights, different preferences.
- Portrait orientation. Rotating a screen for reading or code is possible on some stands and easy on every arm.
If your monitor sits in one position and stays there, this case does not apply to you.
What to check before buying
Arms have compatibility requirements, and each of them is a way to end up with the wrong one.
VESA pattern. The screw holes on the back of the monitor. Usually 100×100 mm or 75×75 mm. Some monitors — particularly thin consumer displays and anything from Apple — have no VESA holes at all and need a specific adapter or cannot be mounted.
Weight rating. Arms specify a range, and the minimum matters as much as the maximum. A gas-spring arm tuned for a 4–9 kg screen will slowly drift upward under a 3 kg one, because the spring is pushing harder than the load. Check that your monitor sits inside the range, not merely under the top of it.
Desk thickness and edge, again. The clamp has a range. Solid tops can be too thick; thin laminate can flex under load; rounded back edges give the clamp nothing flat to grip. This is the same specification that decides whether a desk works with accessories generally, and it is the most common reason an arm gets returned.
Clamp versus grommet. Clamps grip the edge and need clear access behind the desk. Grommet mounts pass through a hole in the surface and hold more securely, but require a hole, which means either the desk has one or you are drilling.
Reach and range. A single-jointed arm swings in an arc. A dual-jointed arm can position the screen anywhere within its reach. If your monitor needs to sit away from the desk’s back edge, check the reach figure rather than assuming.
Single, dual, and the honest version
Dual arms hold two monitors on one mount, which sounds efficient and is a tighter constraint than it appears. The two screens share a base, so their positions are not independent — moving one affects the other, and the combined weight has to sit within the arm’s rating.
Two single arms cost more and give you full independence. If both screens are in constant use, that is usually the better setup. A dual arm is the better choice when the second screen is secondary and rarely moves.
The short version
Buy an arm if your desk is too shallow to spare the footprint, or if the screen needs to move during the day. Both are real problems and an arm solves them well.
If you just need the screen higher, put something under it. That is not a compromise — it is the same result for nothing, and the money is better spent on the parts of the setup that have no free workaround.
